East meets West tonight

HA NOI — An East Meets West concert will be performed tonight by Vietnamese flautist Le Thu Huong and Hafnia Piano Trio from Denmark.

The concert will feature an assortment of classic and modern works by Mozart, Gunnar Berg, and Jacob Gade. In particular, the event will highlight the work of Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla, who revolutionised traditional tango music into a new style, "Nuevo Tango", that incorporates jazz and classical music.

The audience will enjoy Piazzolla's famous tango, Oblivion, composed in 1982 as a chamber ensemble. The melody is melancholic. It is an elegant, sophisticated and emotional piece.

Hafnia Piano Trio was formed this year by cellist Frederik Waage, violinist Suzy Frinking and pianist Gustavo Cardinal. Although based in Copenhagen, the trio has performed in the Netherlands and Germany.

Frederik Waage, the trio's leader, graduated from the soloist class at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. He has won prizes in several competitions, including first prize in the Eva Zanzen Memorial Centre Popper Cello Competition in the US.

Violinist Suzy Frinking graduated from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in 2002. She has extensive experience performing chamber music.

In 2007, Waage and Frinking performed together in the East Meets West concert (Vol 1) that toured in Ha Noi, Hue and HCM City.

Tonight's concert will be the pianist's first performance in Asia. He has received numerous awards, including first prize in the International Piano Competition Guiomar Novaes in Sao Paulo and first prize in the City of Montevideo Competition in Uruguay.

Huong graduated from the Viet Nam National Conservatory of Music in 2001 and now studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. She participated in Sir William Bennett's master class in London and performs regularly with international musicians.

The concert will begin at 8pm at the Viet Nam National Academy of Music's concert hall, 77 Hao Nam Street. — VNS
