Vườn Chuối archaeological site of Hà Nội is the most important and largest relic complex of the pre-Đông Sơn and Đông Sơn Cultures (700 BC – AD 100).
HÀ NỘI — An excavation in Vườn Chuối archaeological site will start from April 25th, the 9th excavation since it was first discovered in 1968.
The Việt Nam Institute of Archaeology and Hà Nội Relics and Landscape Management Board will conduct the excavation in three sites: Vườn Chuối, Mả Phượng and Dền Rắn all in Kim Chung Commune, Hoài Đức District, Hà Nội from April 25 to November 30.
Deputy director of the Việt Nam Institute of Archaeology Bùi Văn Liêm will lead the excavation team.
The objects excavated will be given to Hà Nội Museum for store and preservation, announced the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Tuesday.
Vườn Chuối archaeological site is the most important and largest relic complex of the pre-Đông Sơn and Đông Sơn Cultures (700 BC – AD 100).
Despite the value of the archaeological site, local authorities approved a company’s plan to construct a new urban area on nearly 140 ha covering the area of Vườn Chuối in 2007.
The project, run by Việt Nam Trading Engineering Construction Joint-Stock Corporation, has yet to begin construction, with only a cement mixing station built.
Scientists have proposed the city demand the investor adjust their construction project to leave the Vườn Chuối archaeological site intact or turn it into a park that will both protect the relic and ensure the benefits of the urban area. — VNS
