People's Artist: Veteran movie director Tran Vu died last week

HCM CITY — People's artist Tran Vu, one of Viet Nam's veteran film directors, died in Ha Noi last week. He was 85.

Born in 1925 in Nam Dinh, Vu, whose real name was Nguyen Phu, graduated from the Viet Nam Cinema School when he was in his mid-thirties.

His first film Con Chim Vanh Khuyen (The White-eye), with director Nguyen Van Thong was made when they were both studying at the school.

It received a special prize at the Karlovy Vary International Festival in the Czech Republic in 1962 and a Golden Lotus at the second Viet Nam Film Festival in 1973.

His latter films, including Vo Chong Anh Luc (Mrs and Mr Luc) and Den Hen Lai Len (We Shall Meet Again), also won many prizes at local and international film festivals.

As recognition of his contribution to the country's film development, the Government awarded Director Tran Vu the title of People's Artist and National Prize for Literature and Arts. —VNS
