HA NOI — "I rarely have the chance to see such wonderful photo exhibitions," a Slovakian visitor says about her visit to the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) Photo Exhibition.

"These photos, in both colour and black and white, have separate ways of reflecting the cultures and societies of different countries," she says.

The 30th FIAP Monochrome Biennial and the 32nd FIAP Youth Print Biennial exhibitions and awards' ceremonies were held yesterday at the Viet Nam Exhibition Centre of Art and Literature on Hoa Lu Street, Ha Noi.

FIAP, the Viet Nam Association of Photographic Artists (VAPA) and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism collaborated to organise the event.

The 32nd FIAP Youth Print Biennial was divided into two categories for photographers between 16 and 21 years of age and those under 16.

In the 16 to 21-year-old category, Bronze Medals went to Seibt Anne from Germany for Ballet and Peter Makadi from Hungary for Finalist. Giovanni Busi from Italy won the Silver Medal for Jump and Francesco Rizzato took home the Gold Medal for Crossing 02.

Chinese photographers won the FIAP World Cup in this age group for their series.

In the under-16 group, Tino Marttunen from Finland won the Bronze Medal with Oops! and Martin Meleg from Slovakia took home the Gold Medal for I'm Looking for the Way.

Viet Nam won the FIAP World Cup in this age group with a collection of ten photos and a Silver Medal for A New Day by Truong Minh Phuong.

The biennial youth event drew 238 entries from 13 countries.

"The year 2010 has significant meaning for Viet Nam, as we are celebrating the 1,000th anniversary of Ha Noi this October," says Vu Quoc Khanh, director of VAPA.

"The local organising committee has done its best to successfully organise these biennials for the first time."

Khanh said he was delighted with the jury board selections for the FIAP Monochrome Biennial, which saw the FIAP World Cup going to Scotland, Viet Nam winning the Gold Medal and Australia taking home the Silver Medal."

Nguyen A, who had one photo in the Gold Medal collection of 10 photos, says he feels happy and proud.

"Each of the ten photos tell ten unique stories about the lives of disabled Vietnamese people who still suffer the effects of Agent Orange which was dropped during the war," he says.

In the black-and-white biennial, 420 pictures from 42 countries and territories were showcased.

The exhibition is being held within the framework of the 30th FIAP Congress which began in Ha Noi yesterday.

Emile Wanderscheid, FIAP's president, says he was excited to see an artistic event held before the congress's official opening.

"I expect that in the future, FIAP congress meetings will be organised at the same time as photographic art activities," he says. The exhibition will run until the 30th FIAP Congress ends on Sunday. — VNS
