Japanese art on show in Hue

HUE — The first contemporary Japanese art exhibition has opened in the central city of Hue.

The 42 works by eleven Japanese artists included paintings, sculptures, installations, photos and video clips – all inspired by everyday life. The exhibition, entitled Trip to the Future: Japanese New Generation Fine Arts, will run until July 24.

Student choir to perform in US

HA NOI — A group of 18 Vietnamese students from the private Sol Arts school will join the "Children of the World in Harmony International Young Choir and Dance Contest" in Michigan, USA, organised by Voices Without Border Inc.

The group will perform folk songs, dances and play traditional instruments at the festival, which runs from July 19 to 23.

About 150 singers, dancers and instrumentalists will be taking part in ten concerts.

Sol Arts was established in April 2008 by conductor Dang Chau Anh. The school has trained 500 students in various art forms, including choir, painting and dance.

Last year, a choir from Sol Arts won a bronze medal at a choir festival in South Korea.

French book fair opens in City

HCM CITY — A book fair displaying titles to celebrate French Independence Day on July 14 has opened in HCM City.

The week-long French Book Fair at Tan Dinh Book Store in District 3 features 3,000 titles of various kinds of books, including dictionaries, textbooks, reference books and literature from popular publishing houses in France like Hachette, Cle' International and Larousse.

The fair's organisers are the HCM City Book Distribution Company (FAHASA) and the General Consulate of France.

The fair, which will end on July 21, is offering a 10 per cent discount on all titles.

Classical music at Caravelle Hotel

HCM CITY — Musicians from HCM City's symphony orchestra and music college are performing nightly at Reflections Restaurant in the city's five-star Caravelle Hotel.

Anchored by a pianist, the instrumental mix rotates through the week, with a guitar accompanist on Monday and Thursday, a saxophonist on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday, and a cellist on Wednesday and Saturday.

The Chamber Music Group performs a mix of classical, jazz, and blues music, sentimental pop favourites, and from time to time, a dance number.

Each of the musicians is distinguished in his own right – Pianists Duc Nam and Tuan Manh are talented young musicians who both teach at the HCM City Music College, cellist Vo Dinh Kuan teaches with them and also plays in the HCM City Symphony Orchestra, saxophonist Thanh Tuan is also in the orchestra, and guitarist Duy Khanh lectures at the Tieng Duong Cam (The Sound of Piano) Music School in HCM City. — VNS
