HCM CITY — Viet Nam Television is set to begin broadcast of a programme on the country's attractions that it hopes will bring overseas Vietnamese flocking back to their homeland. Viet Nam Ngay Nay (Viet Nam Today), a joint production by VTV and Sai Gon Tiep Thi newspaper, will be on VTV4 every day, beginning on July 15.
It will be a kaleidoscope on the country's economy, culture, people, and landscapes made by young film-makers.
Bach Ngoc Chien, head of VTV's Foreign Affairs Department, hoped the programme will appeal not only to the 4 million overseas Vietnamese all over the world but also foreigners who are looking for information about Vietnamese culture and people living in this country.
More than 60 per cent of the programme will be in southern accents with the rest being a mix of northern and central accents, he said. "The programme is targeted especially at the young. We were thinking of carrying subtitles for those who cannot understand Vietnamese well, but no longer."
There will be seven different segments every week. Chan Dung Viet (Portrait of Vietnamese People) will feature successful overseas Vietnamese personalities including artists, entrepreneurs and scientists.
Ngay Tro Ve (Return Day) will feature interviews with successful overseas Vietnamese who have come back to Viet Nam to invest or just visit.
Made in Viet Nam will showcase craft villages and traditional products.
1001 Diem Den Thu Vi (1001 Interesting Destinations) will bring interesting and beautiful destinations around Viet Nam.
Dat Phuong Nam on Saturday, Dat Phuong Nam, and Sai Gon toi yeu on Sunday will focus on the southern region.
Dang Tam Chinh, editor in chief of Sai Gon Tiep Thi, said the 60-minute programme will be broadcast at 6pm.
The channel is seen in North America, Europe, Australia, Asia, and North Africa, Chinh said, adding VTV has negotiated with CNN, Russia Today, CCTV, and other television stations to carry the programme. — VNS
