Germans bolster orchestra

HA NOI — The Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) will join guest musicians from Germany for a concert of works by composers Beethoven and Brahms this today and tomorrow in Ha Noi.

German pianist Wolfgang Glemser will play Ludwig Van Beethoven's Concerto No 3 during the first half of the concert. Glemser completed his piano studies at the University of Music in Freiburg and Trossingen. Since then he has successfully participated in competitions and appeared regularly on concert stages.

His career as a pianist has taken him across Europe, Africa, Central America and China, where he has been invited for master classes and concerts.

The second half of the concert will feature German conductor Gudni Emilsson leading the VNSO through a performance of Johannes Brahms' Symphony No4.

Emilsson, who has a masters degree in piano and conducting, has been awarded prizes from the Herbert von Karajan and Richard Wagner Foundations and was honoured by the Deutschen Musikrat. He has appeared as guest conductor with numerous orchestras and ensembles and his musical travels have taken him to festivals and stages the world over. He has served as artistic director of the Tubinger Kammerorchester since 1999 and since 2005 held the same post at the Camerata Bohemica in Prague and the new Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra.

Founded in 1959, the VNSO includes many successful graduates of the Viet Nam National Academy of Music who have trained at well-known music universities in Europe and Asia.

Under the direction of Ngo Hoang Quan, the VNSO have co-operated with renowned conductors including Japan's Honna Tetsuji, Hidemi Suzuki, the UK's Colin Metters, France's Pierre Andre Valade and many others. The concert will start at 8pm at Ha Noi Opera House. — VNS
