HCM CITY — Young women from across the country are encouraged to participate in the national Miss Viet Nam 2018 competition, which has just been launched.

Women aged 18 to 26 who are at least 1.65m tall and have had no cosmetic surgery are eligible to enter the contest.

The contest organisers are Tien Phong newspaper in co-operation with Viet Nam Women’s Association and Sen Vang Agency.

They have invited a group of experts in the field to select 30 candidates for the semifinal rounds in Nghe An and Quy Nhon provinces.

At the semifinals scheduled to be held in mid-September, the contestants will compete in the categories of traditional costumes, swimsuits, question-and-answer sessions and evening wear.

They will also take part in two additional competitions highlighting their talent and charity work.

Miss Viet Nam 2016 Do My Linh will support contestants during the event.

Five finalists will compete on the final night on September 22 at Phu Tho Gymnasium in HCM City’s Tan Binh District.

The winner will receive VND500 million (US$24,000) in cash and gifts worth several hundred millions of dong, while the runner-ups will take home VND200 million ($9,500) each.

The winner will represent Viet Nam in the global competition Miss World 2018.

Organisers will also present Miss Charming Face, Miss Sports and Miss Ao Dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress) and Miss Charity.

The event will be broadcast live on Viet Nam Television.

"We target turning this beauty contest into a charming introduction to the country’s tourism, highlighting famous tourist attractions,” said Le Xuan Son, editor-in-chief of Tien Phong newspaper and head of Miss Viet Nam 2018’s organising board.

Miss Viet Nam began in 1988 and has been organised every two years. The contest has encouraged many young women to demonstrate their talent in careers and charity and social activities.

“We hope our event will offer a chance to young women, particularly those living in remote areas, to live more happily and confidently,” Son added.
