HÀ NỘI - Nguyễn Thảo My and Ngô Bảo Nghi will battle it out for personal and team glory at the inaugural Simone Asia Pacific Cup in Indonesia later this month.

The pair are in a field of 40 golfers from 16 nations and territories at the Ladies Asian Tour Series event, which will be held at the Pondok Indah Golf Course between August 18 and 20 in Jakarta.

My and Nghi will vie in the 54-hole stroke play tournament, which marks the professional tour golf returning to Indonesia for the first time in a decade since the 2012 Indonesia Ladies Open.

Their scores will also count towards a team event of a prize of US$500,000, where an additional US$250,000 purse is up for grabs for 20 two-player teams formed from golf associations across the Asia-Pacific region.

My, 24, turned pro in 2020 after she played for North Carolina University's golf team. She finished second in the national championship in April before taking part in a tour to Europe in June.

Nghi, 29, is a familiar name in Việt Nam. She is a three-time national champion after dominating the junior tournament for six years since 2008. She is the only Vietnamese who took part in four SEA Games editions. Graduated from Lamar University in Texas, Nghi is currently working as a coach in Vũng Tàu City.

My and Nghi were teammates at the 28th SEA Games in 2015 in Singapore.

Leading players include six-time winner of the LPGA Tour Ryu So-yeon of South Korea, 21-time Japan LPGA Tour winner Lee Bo-mee and up-and-coming Yealimi Noh of the United States, who placed third at the Evian Championship in France last year.

World, No 5 Lydia Ko of New Zealand and South Korea's eighth-ranked Kim Hyo-joo will also be the star attractions.

The Asia Pacific Cup is part of the ambitious new money-spinning Ladies Asian Tour Series of tournaments that began last month and will include events in South Korea in September and Singapore in December.

The circuit aims to expand to seven tournaments in Asia next year and 10 for the 2024 season. VNS
