HA NOI — Miss Viet Nam World contestant Pham Thi Thuy Linh has been stripped of her title as Miss Ao Dai (traditional long dress) in the pageant after revelations that she had her nose surgically altered five years ago.
Pageant rules do not allow contestants to have had plastic surgery.
The organising board was informed of Linh's violation of pageant rules after she won the Miss Ao Dai title. Linh admitted to the violation, saying that she hadn't known the rule. Linh said she had no intention to cheat and would accept the pageant judging panel's decision.
The panel reheld the Miss Ao Dai competition yesterday for the four remaining contestants in order to choose the new Miss Ao Dai. Ha Thi Hoang Anh from Ha Noi won the title and entered the top 15 in the pageant's final round.
Veteran painters return to college
HCM CITY — Two alumni of the HCM City Fine Arts College have returned to their old school to put up a major exhibition of paintings.
Le Ngoc Linh and Nguyen Tuan Duc, who studied 10 years apart but are close friends, have similar styles – romantic impressionism and abstract expressionism – and have used oil and lacquer to create the works at the Ngau Hung (Impromtu) exhibition.
Linh, who was born in Quang Tri in 1949, has for the last several decades been creating works using traditional colours on lacquer and egg shells.
What stands out in his works like Pho Co (Ancient Town), Que Ngoai (Mother's Hometown), and Trang Que (Moon over the Countryside) is the integrity to his art.
In all, he has on display 23 lacquer paintings and six sketches made during his trip to the US and other countries.
Duc, 51, an exponent of impressionism and abstract expressionism, has 31 oil paintings including Lang Chai (Fishing Village), Loi Xua (Treked Passage) and Vu Dieu cua Song (Dance of the Wave) on display.
The exhibition, on at the school's Applied Art Gallery, 5 Phan Dang Luu, Binh Thanh District, runs next Monday. — VNS
