HA NOI — Italian pianist Cesare Picco will kick-off Italian Music Month at the Ha Noi Opera House tomorrow.

The concert will feature pieces composed by the musician himself such as My Room, Darakoum, Clock, The First Star, October and a special homage to Bach, A Long Wait.

Picco is a multi-talented Italian pianist and composer. His creations have always been a result of his personal and innovative concept of music, according to Cesare Bieller, chief of the cultural and political arm at the Italian Embassy in Ha Noi.

His first solo piano performance in 1986 featured many of his personal compositions. Picco has since pursued a career as a pianist and become a known composer in Italy and abroad.

In 2007 he published Bach to Me, a personal interpretation of Bach's Brandenburg Concert No 5 performed with the Berlin Chamber Soloists. He played with many known musicians such as Andrea Bocelli and Giovanni Sollima.

"Picco is a modern-style pianist. He gives interactive performances, always incorporating his audience," said Bieller.

Last year, he performed the world premier of Blind Date – Concert in the Dark in Italy, a solo piano concert performed in complete darkness. "The performance was very successful. The artists and the audience enjoyed the performance in the darkness. And listeners were left to imagine where the music was coming from," Bieller said.

Picco plans to take the concert to Tokyo's Hara Museum this month.

"The upcoming concert in Viet Nam is a chance for me to introduce my improvisation style. I'm pleased to arrive in Ha Noi a few days before Saturday's performance because those days will allow me to get a feel for the atmosphere and lifestyle of Ha Noi," Picco said.

Normally, Picco likes to understand the local life in places he is to perform so as to select the most suitable pieces. He also improvises during his concerts, which is always well received by his audiences.

"My improvisation will respect the surrounding elements like the theatre space, the sound, the piano and the response from the listeners. My work reflects my own feelings regarding the taste and sound of the local daily life," Picco said at the press conference.

Tomorrow, Picco will also perform with Vietnamese musician Tri Minh in a work entitled Ha Noi Improvisation. The two musicians worked together to create the concept for the piece.

Ha Noi Improvisation lasts about 20 minutes and uses Ha Noi's typical sounds, said musician Minh. "I'm honoured that I will perform with Cesare Picco. We both agreed that it was important to use Vietnamese timbre as street sounds and voices," said Tri Minh.

Minh will use an electronic instrument to record Picco's piano work and will remix the sound for the Ha Noi Improvisation, which will be the closing piece.

The concert is primarily sponsored by Vietnamese DDP Company and Viet Nam Airlines.

The concert will begin at 8pm. Tickets will be available at 1 Trang Tien Street or by booking on ticketvn@fpt.vn. — VNS
