HÀ NỘI – A dossier on the art of Đông Hồ folk paintings has been sent to UNESCO for inclusion on the list of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding, following Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc’s approval.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Việt Nam National Cultural Heritage Council had previously submitted the dossier to the PM as required for approval.
The Việt Nam National UNESCO Commission coordinated with the ministry to complete all necessary procedures for the dossier.
Đông Hồ Village, now known as Song Hồ Commune in Thuận Thành District, the northern province of Bắc Ninh, is known as the cradle of one of the most famous folk painting genres in the country.
The paintings vividly reflect a traditional agricultural society, along with the life and practices of rural Vietnamese people. The genre contains specific painting, printing, colours and themes. People display them on the occasion of the Mid Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year.
The art of Đông Hồ folk paintings has been making a recovery in recent years to match contemporary life. It was recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2013. VNS
