HCM CITY — As the year-end festival season nears, the nation's leading singers have switched gears at recording studios, rushing to release new albums that they are confident will strike a chord with listeners.

"I have invested all of my energy and passion in my new album," said up and coming singer from Ha Noi, Le Quyen.

To finish her CD, Khuc Tinh Xua (Old Melody), Quyen moved to HCM City and worked with a group of professionals in the field.

"Singing lyrical tunes by veteran composers like Anh Bang and Truc Phuong is not an easy task," she said.

"I spent several months in a studio with a microphone in my face to perfect my recording. I sang with my soul and heart."

Pop star Dam Vinh Hung is sanguine that his latest album, Da Khuc Cho Tinh Nhan (The Serenade) – a CD of 20 popular songs written by famous composers like Trinh Cong Son and Tran Tien – will do well.

Highlights in his album include revolutionary works like Bai Ca Khong Quen (The Song Lives Forever) by Pham Minh Tuan, which has been sung many times by veteran singers.

"Hung's album is an unusual CD for his fans," said music critic Nhu Hoa, noting that the singer and his producer spent a lot of effort to make the CD a high quality product in both appearance and content.

Unlike Quyen and Hung, Duc Tuan worked with young composer Tran Le Quynh to produce Tre Mai (Young Forever), a CD of pop and electronic music, after a two-year hiatus during which he immersed himself in musicals.

"The most important thing that music fans look for in an album is that the singer shares their feelings as if they were close friends," Tuan said.

His album has 10 songs and a track, including Co Gai Den Tu Hom Qua (The Girl Comes From Yesterday) and Neu Anh Quen Tat Ca (Forget All You Know), popular songs on online music forums.

Tuan said young singers cannot become successful professional unless their works endure well beyond their release dates. "But a talented singer is flexible in the music they do, and leads his/her fans to different styles."

He also is working on another album featuring musicals for release during the Christmas season.

Meanwhile, Ha Noi-based Quang Ha has finished recording his latest album, featuring romantic songs about the capital city that he promises "will have new and strange things to surprise my fans". — VNS
