TV dreamers compete for prize

HA NOI — Viet Nam Television's Dreaming Star is one of the nominees at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Prize 2010 for the entertainment jury's special prizes.

The show Dreaming Star, will compete with five other programmes in the television entertainment category including 26 Hour Day from Tokyo Broadcasting System Television; 101 Things To Do Before Dying from the Korean Broadcasting System and Pacific Pulse from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The show will have to beat four other rivals from Pakistan, Mauritius, Afghanistan and Mongolia to win the Television Special Jury Prize.

Dreaming Star was launched in 2009 with a monthly broadcast on Viet Nam Television's Channel 6 (VTV6). The 60 minute studio-based show is broadcast at 9pm on the first Thursday of the month.

A ten minute-programme is aired weekly on Wednesday at 8.45pm to promote the next show.

The programme aims to help the dreams of young people come true with support from individuals, organisations and a ‘dream' ambassador. The ambassadors are celebrities who have made a good impression on society.

The ambassadors feature as special guests on the show which is hosted by presenter Bach Duong. The participants talk about dreams of the ambassador and how their dreams can come true.

Other guests include young people who have nurtured their dreams. Phu Thi Thien, a Pa Then ethnic person was invited to the show on March with the ambassador hip hop singer Kim Jo Jo. Thien wants to advertise and develop the traditional culture of her ethnic group. She played a bamboo flute from the mountainous province of Ha Giang.

A volunteer group BacGiangview appeared on the show with the wish to establish a library. They want to continue the dream of a young girl, Nguyen Hong Cong who died after an unsuccessful battle against kidney disease. She had expressed her wish to establish a small library in Bac Giang Province.

The dreams of about 50 young people from the whole country have been featured on the show.

Ta Bich Loan, head of VTV6, welcomed the nomination, saying it was good news for VTV6, as it highlighted the quality of Vietnamese programmes.

The awards ceremony will take place on October 19 in Tokyo. — VNS
