HCM CITY — HCM City and other provinces are organising numerous activities to encourage and firm up reading habits, especially among children and young people.
The programme aims to celebrate the Việt Nam Book and Reading Cultural Day on April 21 to introduce quality books to readers, and honour authors and people working in book publishing and distribution and those contributing to developing the reading culture among the community.
HCM City will host a book fair downtown from April 17-22.
The fair will display thousands of Vietnamese and foreign titles on various topics from the city’s major publishers and book distributors such as HCM City Book Distribution Corporation (FAHASA), Trẻ (Youth) Publishing House, Phương Nam Books and HCM City General Publishing House.
It will showcase books which won the 2023 National Book Awards.
Readers will have an opportunity to listen and read hundreds of audiobooks and e-books at the event.
The fair will also include several talks among authors and cultural experts and visitors to promote reading habits among the community.
Book introduction and signing programmes will be organised as well.
Book fair organisers will host a special exhibition to introduce publications and documents to mark the 49th anniversary of National Reunification Day (April 30), the 70th anniversary of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory (May 7, 1954 - 2024) and the 1954 Geneva Accords.
The fair will take place at Paris Square and the HCM City Book Pedestrian Street on Nguyễn Văn Bình Street in District 1.
A series of activities to mark the book day will also be held at schools and agencies in 21 districts and Thủ Đức City from April 15 to May 1 to encourage the reading habit, including building bookshelves, gifting books, and promoting audiobooks and e-books.

Meanwhile, Đồng Nai Province is opening its book fair with the theme of “Lan Tỏa Tri Thức” (Spread Knowledge) at Biên Hùng Park in Biên Hòa City from April 9 to 14.
The event introduces10,000 book titles from the Trẻ Publishing House, Saigon Books, Nhã Nam, Đinh Tị, and Minh Long Books.
Book introductions and music performances are featured as well.
During the event, sellers offer a discount of 15-50 per cent on books and stationery.
The Tây Nguyên (Central Highlands) province of Lâm Đồng will host a book fair at the University of Đà Lạt on April 11 and 12.
The fair will display books, and digital technology devices for reading.
It will include cultural activities such as calligraphy and folk games.
The provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism encourages authorities of districts and Đà Lạt City to host activities to promote the Việt Nam Book and Reading Cultural Day, in order to contribute to inculcating reading habits among the community. — VNS
