HCM CITY — Cai luong (reformed theatre) performer Thanh Ngan has won her second consecutive award for Most Favourite TV Cai Luong Artist at this year's HCM City Television Awards. More than 37,500 fans called in and voted for Ngan.
"My highest number of votes proves that audiences have not turned their back on cai luong," Ngan said after winning the award on Monday night, adding that the public's continuing love for the operatic art form was her biggest joy.
Ngan, who received the Tran Huu Trang Golden Prize in 1996 from HCM City Stage Art Association (HSA), said she will withdraw from the HTV Awards next year to make way for colleagues and young artists to be recognised.
The contest, launched by HTV and Dong Tay Promotions since 2006, recognises performers who have contributed most to the development of the station during the year in categories of TV series, music and theatre.
This year's contest was a big one for comedians, as Thanh Nam and Tan Beo got two of the four TV series awards with Most Favourite TV Serial Actor and Favourite TV Serial Supporting Actor.
Nam won over TV audiences by playing a farmer who goes on a spending spree with new-found wealth from selling rice fields to an industrial zone in Cuoc Phieu Luu Cua Hai Lua (The Adventure of Hai Lua) while Tan Beo received an award for his role in Tinh An (Love Cases).
"Today Hai Lua (Nam's role) actually finds wealth," said Nam when receiving his first award.
Actress Ngan Khanh won Most Favourite TV Serial Actress for her role as a student, who is confronted with many problems following her decision to live with her boyfriend, in the TV series Song Tinh (Love Wave).
The award for Most Favourite TV Serial Supporting Actress was given to Nguyet Anh for her part in the series on school life – Thu Ba Hoc Tro (Students Are the Third Most Scary Thing).
It was the first time that both actresses have won HTV awards.
The award for the Most Favourite Male and Female Singers went to Dam Vinh Hung and My Tam while another singer Quang Dung was chosen for the organisers and sponsor's award for Most Friendly Artist recognising his participation in the station's charity and community activities.
The winner of each category won an HTV Cup and VND20 million (US$1,100) in prize money. — VNS
