Southern Food Festival opens in HCM City

HCM CITY — Popular specialities from many cities and provinces are on offer at the 8th Southern Food Festival that opened yesterday at Dam Sen Cultural Park in HCM City’s District 11.

The four-day event has 60 food stalls set up by restaurants, hotels and food and beverage businesses in HCM City; Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Dong Nai, Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, Tay Ninh, Ben Tre, Long An, and Tien Giang provinces; and the Central Highlands.

There are several zones earmarked for local specialities such as the Old Saigon area, che (pudding) and banh (cake), clean and safe vegetables, local markets, and traditional handicrafts.

The event will also feature performances such as don ca tai tu (southern amateur music) and dance by an E De ethnic minority art troop.

The annual festival aims to preserve and promote the country’s culinary culture and cuisine tourism, Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa, deputy director of the city Department of Tourism, said.

Entry fee costs VND250,000 (US$11) and includes a food voucher.

Children get free admission on International Children’s Day, June 1.

The event is organised by the Department of Tourism, the Tourism Association and Phu Tho Tourist Service Company. —VNS
