Ukraine folklore artists perform in Ha Noi

HA NOI — A group of artists from the Ukraine Grygorii Veryovka National Academic Folk Chorus will perform in Ha Noi tomorrow on the occasion of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich's official visit.

Six soloists will sing folk songs praising the beauty of the country and love of young people.

The invitation only show will kick off at 8pm at Au Co Art Centre, No 8 Huynh Thuc Khang Street.

World's biggest blanket finished in Da Lat

LAM DONG — A record 200sq.m blanket made from over 20,000 individual patches of embroidery was completed in Da Lat on Monday, according to the Da Lat Academy foreign languages centre .

The blanket will be auctioned later this year in Ha Noi to raise funds for victims of Agent Orange.

The Association of Da Lat's Friends in the Footprints of Dr Yersin co-ordinated with the Foreign Languages Centre - Da Lat Academy to encourage people to take part in the activity. Half of the blanket was knitted in the French town of Montpellier and transported to Da Lat where it was joined with its Vietnamese half, after citizens from both countries began working on the record blanket back in June 2009.

American veteran releases poetry collection on Viet Nam

HA NOI — A poetry reading was held at the Cultural Centre for Students last night, titled Songs of the Co Loa Citadel.

Kevin Bowen selected poems from his collection that have been published in the US about the country and people of Viet Nam as well as love, friendship, war and healing.

Bowen served in the American War between 1968-69. These days, besides researching wars and their social consequences, he writes poetry. Tomorrow, he will receive the Phan Chu Trinh Award for his contribution to promoting cultural exchange between the two countries.

Nation-wide children's drawing contest launched

HA NOI — A drawing contest has been launched by the Department of Fine Art, Photography and Exhibitions under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for 2011.

Mediums can include wax, water colours, acrylics, felt pens and coloured pencils (not black). Each entry must be sized between 30x40cm and 38x55cm and each contestant is only allowed to enter a maximum of two.

Drawings should be sent to 38 Cao Ba Quat Street, Ba Dinh District, Ha Noi by May 1.

‘Norwegian Wood' wins prize at Asia Film Awards

HA NOI — Overseas Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung's latest movie Norwegian Wood bagged the 5th Asia Film Awards prize for the best cinematography in Hong Kong on Monday.

The movie is a Japanese drama based on Haruki Murakami's novel of the same name. The film was released in Japan last year December.

The movie was also nominated for best actress and best costume design. —VNS
