DA NANG — This year's Universal Postal Union (UPU) champion Ho Thi Hieu Hien has won big again.

Her short film won first prize at the national film competition for students.

The contest was held by local authorities and the Japanese Embassy in Viet Nam. The competition asked student's to make films about family issues.

Hien's three-minute film, Buoi Hoc Cua Thuy (The Class of Thuy), centres around Thuy. The main character is a high school student who never has enough time to study because her parents frequently ask her to run errands, while her younger brother teases her for having fun.

Hien said that the movie was adapted from a short story that she submitted at the 2010 literature composition camp. The story won second prize at the camp.

"At first, my schoolmates Kieu Thao Vi, Vo Thi Hoang My and I intended to make a short movie about HIV/AIDS, then we decided to adapt my story for the movie since it involves school life," says Hien.

With the assistance of a digital and film camera, Hien and her two friends started looking for amateur actors.

"The hardest thing for us was casting and choosing a place to shoot," says Hien.

The twelve-year-old UPU champion said she was forced to shoot and set the scenes with her digital camera after her other camera broke.

"I had to download film-making software from the internet and install it by myself," says Hien.

After the movie was finished, Hien had it translated into Japanese and then submitted her entry.

"We sent in two videos to the contest, but didn't expect that one of them would win," says Thao Vi.

"That fact that my students can make a real movie was astonishing," says Hien's teacher at Tay Son High School Pham Thi Phong. "I think other students can learn from this movie."

The film contest received 36 entries from high school students around the country. The winning group's film will be submitted to another contest in Ibushiki, Japan on December 4. — VNS
