Young protege to debut in HCM City

HCM CITY — Seventeen-year-old pianist Nguyen The Cuong Quoc will make his first public appearance at the HCM City Music Conservatory's Music Hall tonight.

He will perform works by Beethoven, Ravel, Chopin and Rachmaninov, with support from the conservatory's symphony orchestra.

Quoc, who was born into a traditional family in HCM City, began to learn music study at the age of four.

As a student at the conservatory, he took part in dozens of local and international piano competitions, winning top honours at the Per Giovanni Piano Competition in Napoli in 2003 and Bradshaw & Buono Piano Contest in New York in 2005.

Quoc will open with chapters Les Adieux, L'Absence and Le Retour from Beethoven's Sonate No 26, Les Adieux.

He will continue with Menuet, Toccata from the Suite Le tombeau de Couperin composed by Ravel, before going on to perform Chopin's Andente spianato et grande polonaise briallante, Op22.

He will close with Rachmaninov's Concerto No 2 in C minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op.18.

The Music Hall is located at 112 Nguyen Du Street, District 1. Tickets are available at the theatre's box office ranging from VND100,000 (US$5) to VND200,000. —VNS
