HA NOI — Ha Noi has been hard at work preparing for its first Formula 1 race which is scheduled to take place in April 2020.
Site clearance is currently underway on the location the city has picked to build the 5.5-kilometre track near My Dinh Stadium in Nam Tu Liem District.
Workers have been dismantling workshops and storage facilities while local people are taking down makeshift buildings at the site. The lot was previously assigned to and managed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and was meant to be developed into an indoor sports complex.
According to the city, the ministry has agreed in principle with Ha Noi’s proposal to host the race. The decision is now pending the Prime Minister’s approval.
Viet Nam will be the third Southeast Asian country to host an F1 race along with Malaysia and Singapore. Hosting the F1 is a decision that has been met with much fanfare by the city’s officials as well as scrutiny as it may prove to be a costly endeavour. —VNS
