HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Văn Đương of Việt Nam pocketed a bronze medal at the Asia/Oceania Olympic boxing qualifying tournament on Wednesday in Amman, Jordan.
Đương, who won Việt Nam’s second ever Olympic boxing slot on Monday, was defeated 3-2 by Mohammad Abdelaziz Mohamm Alwadi of the hosts in the men’s featherweight (52-57kg) category.
Alwadi will fight No 1 seed Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov of Uzbekistan in the final, who beat Serik Temirzhanov of Kazakhstan.
Earlier Wednesday, Vietnamese Nguyễn Mạnh Cường failed to secure his Olympic berth after losing 4-1 to Indian Sachin Kumar in a play-off for the men’s light heavyweight (75-81kg) class.
Việt Nam sent four athletes to the qualifiers but only Đương has made it to the Olympics.
The Jordan tournament, which attracted more than 200 boxers from 34 countries competing for 63 Olympic places, will end on Thursday. VNS
