PHNOM PENH — Vietnamese table tennis duo Đinh Anh Hoàng and Trần Mai Ngọc successfully defeated Singaporean duo Clarence Chew and Jian Cheng 3-1 in Cambodia on Sunday, winning a gold medal for Việt Nam for the first time in 26 years.

Ngọc and Hoàng led 2-1 after three sets and in the fourth set, the Vietnamese athletes played with concentration to secure a 15-12 victory, bringing home the historic gold medal.

"I am very happy that my players have re-established my own achievement after 26 years. It's so amazing and congratulations to Hoàng and Ngọc,” coach Cường said.

Also yesterday, Việt Nam also won gold in the 12-seater mixed event of traditional boat racing, in which the team had to compete with strong rivals from Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
