DA NANG — Duo Ly Hoang Nam and Le Quoc Khanh failed to win their first men’s doubles match in the Viet Nam Tennis Open Da Nang City 2019 on January 7 against Ayeni Alafia of the US and Stefan Vujic of Australia, losing 6-3, 7-5, 13-11.
The Vietnamese pair started strong by taking two break points to win 6-4 in the first set, but their opponents earned a break to lead 3-1 before winning the tough second set by a score of 7-5.
In the tie-break, Australian Stefan Vujic showed off his powerful serves to complete a 13-1 winning set and match.
In the men’s singles matches played on January 7, Vietnamese-American Daniel Nguyen took a 6-2, 6-4 win over Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, while overseas Vietnamese Thai Son ousted Yossef Hossam from Egypt with a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Vietnamese player Trinh Linh Giang suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Avidzba Alen from Russia in the first round.
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP)’s Challenger Tour will continue with the men’s singles and doubles matches untill January 12.
Top Vietnamese player Ly Hoang Nam was awarded three points in the ATP ranking and a US$520 cash prize for his first-round win over German Daniel Altmaier 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. — VNS
