HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese top tennis player Lý Hoàng Nam was ousted from the qualifying round of the ITF World Tour M25 Nonthaburi in Thailand on Tuesday.
Nam, world No 673, lost to Rapp Austin of the US, world No 690, in the decisive match to qualify for the main round 0-2 (3-6, 3-6).
Earlier, Nam won the first two matches. He beat Jones Maximus of Thailand 2-0 (6-1, 6-3) and Yamao Tamaki of Japan 2-0 (7-5, 6-3).
In the other event held in Thailand, Nam was also ousted from the qualifying round.
Nam of Hải Đăng Tây Ninh club is Southeast Asian (SEA) Games' defending champion. He beat Daniel Cao Nguyễn in the final of SEA Games to help Việt Nam take a gold medal after 30 years of waiting.
Nam will next compete in the ITF World Tour M15 in Egypt on February 24-29 to raise his world rankings. Then he will convene with the national team to take part in the Davis Cup. — VNS
