HA NOI — Striker Nguyen Cong Phuong only goal helped Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) beat Thanh Hoa in the 10th round of the V.League 1 yesterday.
Phuong’s goal came from a long shot in the 16th minute which beat goalie Bui Tien Dung of Thanh Hoa, who shone for the national team in the AFC U23 Championship in China in January, in which Viet Nam won a silver medal.
The central province of Nghe An-born player’s early goal gave his side confidence, but despite piling on the pressue HAGL failed to score again in the first half.
After the break, the last season’s runners-up Thanh Hoa fought back.
They had a chance to score in the 72nd minute but Trong Hoang’s header struck the crossbar.
Thanh Hoa created many chances in the last minutes, but HAGL’s goalkeeper Pham Van Tien couldn’t be beaten.
In other fixtures, striker Mac Hong Quan’s goal in added time gave Quang Ninh Coal a win away to Hai Phong at the Lach Tray Stadium.
Elsewhere, Sanna Khanh Hoa drew 2-2 with Nam Dinh; HCM City tied goalless with defending champions Quang Nam; and Ha Noi bested Song Lam Nghe An 2-1.
After 10 rounds, Ha Noi top the table with 26 points, followed by Quang Ninh with 20 points and Binh Duong with 17 points. — VNS
