HÀ NỘI – Vũ Anh Thư is the only Vietnamese athlete survived in the main round of the Ciputra Hanoi International Badminton Tournament's singles events.
Thư defeated Yeung Sum Yee of Hong Kong in the women's singles first round match on March 13 at the Tây Hồ Gymnasium in Hà Nội. She will next play No 7 seed Lin Sih Yun of Chinese Taipei.
Earlier, local stars such as former No 1 Vũ Thị Trang lost in the qualification round in the women's singles.
Last year's silver medallist Lê Đức Phát and national No 1 Nguyễn Hải Đăng were unexpectedly ousted from the first round.
The tournament opened on March 12, attracting 310 athletes from 19 countries and territories.
The athletes will compete in five categories: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The winners of each category will receive a cash prize of US$1,200, while runner-ups and third-placed athletes in each category will pocket $720 and $300, respectively.
The tournament, organised by the Hà Nội Department of Culture and Sports and the Hanoi Badminton Federation, belongs to the competition and scoring system of the Badminton World Federation. It will last until March 17.
Athletes with high international rankings competing at the tournament include Rhustavito Shesar Hiren (Indonesia, ranked 76th in the world men's singles), Shetty Ayush (India, 78th in the world men's singles), Sim Yu-jin (South Korea, 39th in the world women's singles), and Letsthana Karupahthevan (Malaysia, 55th in the world women's singles).
