HÀ NỘI -- Võ Thị Mỹ Tiên has received a wildcard to compete at the Paris Olympic Games next month.

The decision was made by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) and confirmed by the Việt Nam Aquatic Sports Association (VASA).

As per the rules, a national Olympic Committee with a qualified athlete of one gender may enter one swimmer of the other gender.

Tiên is currently the national leading female swimmer of Việt Nam in the Olympics' ranking with 775 points from qualifications. She was the only female athlete to participate in the 2023 World Swimming Championship, a mandatory condition for an Olympic wildcard in swimming. The 18-year-old is strong in freestyle categories.

Tiên will be Việt Nam's second swimmer at the competition, following Nguyễn Huy Hoàng who took his official ticket at last year's Asian Games in China.

Born in October 2005 in Long An Province, Tiên is the only child in her family and has been swimming at elite level since she was ten years old. Just two years later, Tiên secured her first medals at the domestic youth championships.

In 2019, she bagged two silvers and three bronzes at the ASEAN Age Groups Swimming Championships. Two years later she took two silvers and one bronze at the 31st SEA Games.

Last year, Tiên was voted best athlete of the National Top Swimmer Tournament. She was also nominated for the Vietnamese Outstanding Young Face Award 2023.

A total of 852 athletes will compete in swimming at the Paris 2024. The swimming competition will take between July 27 and August 4 at the Paris La Défense Arena. A total of 35 events will be contested, broken up into heats, semifinals and finals.

To date, Việt Nam have had 14 athletes competing in Paris.

They are cyclist Nguyễn Thị Thật, swimmer Nguyễn Huy Hoàng and Võ Thị Mỹ Tiên, shooters Trịnh Thu Vinh and Lê Thị Mộng Tuyền, weightlifter Trịnh Văn Vinh, canoeist Nguyễn Thị Hương, rower Phạm Thị Huệ, badminton players Nguyễn Thùy Linh and Lê Đức Phát, boxer Võ Thị Kim Ánh and Hà Thị Linh, archer Lê Quốc Phong and judo fighter Hoàng Thị Tình.
