HÀ NỘI — Top Vietnamese billiards star Trần Quyết Chiến has once again made history by clinching the 2024 Bogota World Cup title in Colombia on Monday (Hà Nội time).
Ranked as the world's No 5 player, Chiến displayed exceptional skill and determination as he defeated Sameh Sidhom of Egypt, world No 7, in the final, securing his third World Cup victory.
Chiến's path to success in South America began with a strong start in the group stage, where he secured three impressive victories. However, his most challenging match came in the round of 16 against Tayfun Tasdemir of Turkey, where Chiến narrowly escaped defeat as Tasdemir unfortunately missed the match-ending score.
Undeterred by the close call, Chiến demonstrated his resilience by securing consecutive victories against Tolgahan Kiraz of Turkey, ranked 18th in the world, in the quarterfinals, and Glenn Hofman of the Netherlands, ranked 47th, in the semi-finals.
Prior to participating in the Bogota World Cup, Chiến, Việt Nam's No 1 player, made meticulous preparations to enhance his chances of success. He emphasised physical training and acclimating himself to the South American time zone, ensuring he was in prime form for the tournament.

His achievement marks a significant milestone, as he climbs to the rank of world No 2. With the 70 points earned from his victory in Colombia, Chiến now holds 389 points in the World Billiards Federation's rankings, trailing only 46 points behind world No 1 Cho Myung-woo of South Korea.
Chiến previously achieved his highest ranking of No 3 in the world in 2022.
Vietnamese billiards enthusiasts are optimistic that Chiến's victory will inspire the national team to further accomplishments in the realm of sports.
Following the tournament, Chiến, along with Bao Phương Vinh, will represent Việt Nam in the upcoming 2024 World Team Championship, scheduled to take place in Viersen, Germany from March 21 to 24.
Additionally, the 2024 World Three-Cushion Championship will be held at Sea Links City Resort in Phan Thiết City, Bình Thuận Province in September. This championship holds special significance for Vietnamese cueist Vinh, who is the defending champion, and Chiến, the previous year's first runner-up. VNS
