VN women bag double gold in rowing

HÀ NỘI — The Vietnamese rowing team is looking strong on the water at the SEA Games 31, successfully securing two gold medals on Friday.

Hồ Thị Lý, Phạm Thị Thảo, Lường Thị Thảo, Nguyễn Thị Giang bagged one more gold for Việt Nam and the second for their collection after finishing first in the women’s lightweight quadruple sculls on May 13.

The group of four clocked in 7min 11.32sec to beat Indonesia and win the gold medal at Thuỷ Nguyên rowing centre of Hải Phòng City.

It’s the second gold for the women’s team after taking first in the women’s quadruple sculls on May 11.

Indonesian Melani Putri, Nurtang, Anggi Widiarti and Mutiara Rahma Putri clocked a time of 7min 18.38sec for a silver medal.

The bronze medal went to the Philippines team, including Joanie Delgaco Talagtag, Kharl Julianne Sha Bengco, Feiza Jane Lenton Bulado, and Alyssa Hannah Marciana Go Chong Muñoz.

Vietnamese Hồ Thị Lý said she would dedicate the victory to Vietnamese supporters, family members and friends.

She said she had been training in rowing since 2015, and the gold medal was a glorious prize after years of hard work.

“I feel so happy today. I received full support from local people from the start. My mother-in-law followed me from the start, and she even came here to push me to the victory podium today,” Lý said.

“My husband, a rower, reserved time for me during training sessions with the national team, and his love contributed so much to my gold medal.”

Duo Đinh Thị Hảo and Phạm Thị Huệ stood at the victory podium on May 13 after winning the gold medal in the women’s pair with a result of 8min 11.56sec.

Julianti and Chelsea Corputty of Indonesia finished second in 8min 21.05sec.

Myanmar’s Shwe Zin Latt and Nilar Win took bronze in 8min 25.87sec.

In the men’s lightweight quadruple sculls, the Indonesia team of Ardi Isadi, Ihram, Kakan Kusmana and Ali Mardiansyah won gold in 6min 28.39sec.

Vietnamese Nguyễn Văn Hà, Nguyễn Văn Tuấn, Nhữ Đình Nam and Bùi Văn Hoàn managed silver in 6min 34.44sec.

The Philippines team of Athens Greece Tolentino Andrade, Van Adrian Maxilom Dela Cerna, Christian Joseph Jasmin Del Rosario and Emmanuel Joseph Obaña Cortes bagged the bronze with a time of 6min 46.84sec.

The rowing will close on May 14. VNS
