Comedy drama a top-grossing Việt Nam film

HA NOI — Now showing in cinemas, Nhung Thang Nam Ruc Ro (Go-Go Sister) is one of two movies released this year that have been included in the five top grossing Vietnamese films.

The comedy/ drama, the latest production by established director Nguyen Quang Dung, has so far pulled in VND84 billion (US$3.7 million) at the box office, with an audience of 1.4 million since its release.

Thang Nam Ruc Ro is a Vietnamese adaption of the Korean blockbuster, Sunny. It focuses on the friendship and reunification of a group of urban women who used to be friends in their youth.

After meeting her old friend My Dung, protagonist Hieu Phuong is devastated to discover her high school friend is dying of cancer. In order to comfort her friend, Hieu Phuong reunites their childhood gang "the wild horses", bringing the characters back to the golden days of their youth.

The movie features performances from established and emerging actors such as Hong Anh and My Duyen, who play some of the women in their adult life, and Hoang Yen and Hoang Oanh, who play the girls while they are in high school.

Veteran script writer Pham Thuy Nhan added some flair to the finished piece, giving a viewers the chance to understand more about Vietnamese history, such as the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, and student demonstrations against the war.

Thang Nam Ruc Ro is still on showing with English subtitles in cinemas across the country.

The list of the top five highest grossing films in Viet Nam also includes Sieu Sao Sieu Ngo (Super Star Super Silly), which was released during the Lunar New Year holiday period this year.

Directed by Duc Thinh, the rom — com  tells the story of a star in show business. Actor Truong Giang plays two characters as twin brothers, who work as a movie star and a farmer, respectfully. Everything becomes complicated when the star’s manager suggests the farmer take over for his famous brother.

The movie turnover reached VND106 billion becoming the second highest grossing film in the country.

The media and entertainment company CJ CGV Viet Nam’s statistics show that the top five highest grossing Vietnamese films are: Em Chua 18 (Jailbait) - VND169 billion; Sieu Sao Sieu Ngo - 106 billion; Em La Ba Noi Cua Anh (Sweet 20) - 102 billion; De Mai Tinh 2 (Fool For Love) - 101 billion and Thang Nam Ruc Ro. — VNS
