VN, Russian soloists perform at “Musical Journey through Europe”

HCM CITY — Vietnamese violinist Bui Cong Duy and Russian cellist Dmitri Feygin will perform at the Musical Journey through Europe concert at the HCM City Opera House on March 18.

Duy will open the concert with the Festive Overture in A Major, op 96 by Dmitri Shostakovich, one of Russia’s great composers of the 20th century. The composition was played at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in 2009.

The night will continue with Violin Concerto No 1 in G Minor, op 26, a famous work of German composer Max Bruch.

Duy, 37, who began playing violin at the age of four under the instruction of his father, professor and violinist Bui Cong Thanh, is a graduate of the Tchaikovsky National Music College in Moscow.

He won top prizes at international competitions, including the first prize and golden medal of the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Saint Petersburg in 1997.

He has performed at concerts in many countries, and served as a jury member at international competitions such as the VI International Violin Competition in Astana, Kazakhstan in 2016, and the 8th and 10th Tchaikovsky International Competitions for Young Musicians in Moscow in 2014 and in Astana in 2017.

Duy is now Deputy Rector for Concert Activities of the Viet Nam National Academy of Music.

Russian cellist Feygin will perform Cello Concerto No 1 in A Minor, op 33 by French composer Camille Saint-Saens in 1872.

Feygin, 50, studied cello with his father, the distinguished cellist Valentine Feygin. He completed his master’s degree at Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

He has performed with numerous orchestras in Russia and Japan, and at concerts and festivals in Russia, Austria and France. He currently serves as a professor at the Tokyo College of Music.

The concert will end with Romeo and Juliet, TH 42, ČW 39, an orchestral work composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky based on Shakespeare’s play of the same name, featuring the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO).

Conductor Le Ha My, a graduate of Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, will lead the concert.

The performance will begin at 8pm at the opera house, 7 Lam Son Square, in District 1. Tickets are available at the venue’s box office. — VNS
