HA NOI — A priest pays obeisance, says a prayer and leaves the offerings on the swing to start Gie Khu Gia (praying at the swing), a ritual to pray for rain of the Ha Nhi ethnic group.
It is one of several unique rituals and festivals of ethnic peoples living in the northern province of Lai Chau to be showcased in a programme called Colours of Lai Chau.
The programme will take place in April at the Viet Nam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in the Dong Mo tourism area in Ha Noi.
The programme, meant to celebrate Viet Nam Ethnic Groups’ Cultural Day (April 19), will feature the cultural practices of groups such as Khmer, Mong, Tay, Si La, Thai, Ha Nhi, and La Ha and tribes from the Central Highlands.
The highlight will be the reproduction of a typical rural market in Lai Chau from April 27 to May 1, offering visitors local dishes, indigenous cultural and handicrafts products and folk games.
The ethnic peoples will bring their folk music and dancing to the event.
Besides Gie Khu Gia, the programme will also feature rituals such as Pang A (praying for peace) of the La Ha, the new-rice season welcoming ritual of the Si La and the Chol Chnam Thmay (New Year) festival of the Khmer. — VNS
