HCM CITY — The third HCM City Book Fair for Children to promote the habit of reading among children and teenagers has opened on July 15 at the HCM City Book Pedestrian Street.

The fair, themed “Khơi Nguồn Tri Thức – Chắp Cánh Ước Mơ” (Unleash the Knowledge - Let Your Dreams Fly), is organised by the HCM City Department of Information and Communications and its partners.

The fair offers more than 16,000 titles of books for children by local and foreign authors, mostly literature, from 18 local publishers and distributors, including Kim Đồng Publishing House, Phương Nam Book Company, Trẻ Publishing House and Sbooks Joint Stock Company.

Sbooks will introduce two new publications, including poetry book Những Ngọn Đèn Thơm (Fragrant Lights) by poet Hồ Huy Sơn and short story Về Phía Bình Minh (Sunrise) by female author Võ Thu Hương on July 16.

Both works feature family love and friendship.

Comic books, colouring books and reference books are also being offered at the fair.

The event includes a showcase of books for children that won national book and literature awards such as Mùa Tiểu Học Cuối Cùng (The Final Year Of Primary School) by author Lê Văn Nghĩa, Chang Hoang Dã – Gấu (Wild Chang and Bear) by author Trang Nguyễn and illustrator Jeet Dzung, and Chiếc Dép Thất Lạc (The Lost Sandal) by Belgian writer Geralda De Vos and Swedish illustrator Sofia Holt.

Russian books for children published between 1986 and 1990 are on display as well.

The organisers will host around 30 workshops and discussions during the event.

Discussions about which books are children’s favourites and what children want in books will feature experts such as Quách Thu Nguyệt, former editor-in-chief of Trẻ Publishing House and Dương Trần Bình, principle of the Lê Đức Thọ Primary School, and students from schools in the city.

The highlight of this year’s event will be two plays for children, Làm Bạn Với Bầu Trời (Be a Friend with the Sky) and Yêu Thương Chấp Cánh (Love is Here), staged by the Sen Việt Theatre at 5pm on July 15 and 24, respectively.

Two concerts themed “Âm Nhạc và Văn Học” (Music and Literature) and "Giai Điệu Mùa Hè" (Summer Vibes) will be held at 5pm on July 16 and 17.

The book fair is open to public at Nguyễn Văn Bình, Hai Bà Trưng and Paris Square Streets in District 1 until July 24. — VNS
