HCM CITY — The music of Brahms will be featured during a concert by pianist Nguyen Bich Tra, known as Tra Nguyen, at the HCM City Opera House today.

Tra will perform the 50-minute Piano Concerto No 2 in B-flat Major, op.83 for solo piano with orchestral accompaniment, which will be followed by contemporary dance performance by the HCM City ballet troupe.

Brahms began working on the concerto in 1878 and completed it in 1881.

The work includes four movements and is dedicated to the composer's teacher, pianist-composer Eduard Marxsen.

It was an immediate success after its debut in Budapest in 1881 by Brahms as a soloist.

"I hope my performance at home will highlight Brahms's music," said the 37-year-old, who lives in London but often returns to Ha Noi and HCM City to perform.

One of the country's most promising pianists, Tra graduated from the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory in 1997.

In 1999, she completed an advanced performance course at the Royal Academy of Music in London and continued her master's degree at the College of Music and Media there.

She has performed in Europe, working with prestigious studios and producers such as Toccata Classics, Radio Four Hongkong, Sterling CDs and Ars Produktion.

In the concert today, Tra will perform with support of the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera, under conductor Tran Vuong Thach.

The show will include a contemporary dance from the orchestra's ballet members. They will perform dances Khong De (No Title), Vong Thoi Gian (Circle of Time) and Ngo Nhan (Illusion), choreographed and staged by young talents Nguyen Tan Loc, Thanh Phuong, Phuc Hai and Phuc Hung.

The event will begin at 8pm, at the Opera House, 7 Lam Son Square, District 1. Tickets, ranging from VND100,000 – 200,000 (US$10), are available at the theatre's box office. — VNS
