Month long vegetarian buffet set to impress

HCM CITY — Van Canh Restaurant on District 1's Calmette Street will stage daily buffets for non-meat eaters during the whole seventh month of the lunar calendar until September 10.

Themed Back to the Origin, the buffet lunches are from 11am to 2pm and dinners from 5.30 to 9pm.

Apart from its usual collection of its dishes like salads, soups and sushi, the buffet will offer traditional Vietnamese rice noodles from around the country – Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta, Hue, Nha Trang and Ha Noi.

For dessert, guests will be served vegetarian moon cakes provided by Givral bakery. Tickets are available at reception at Van Canh and A Dong Restaurant in District 5 at VND110,000 (US$6) and 140,000 ($7.5) for lunches and dinners respectively. For every 10 tickets get one free.

Hue's former French bishop in the spotlight

THUA THIEN-HUE — A three-day symposium on the life and work of Leopold Cadiere, former bishop of Hue, will start in Hue today, the office of the Hue Archdiocese said.

It will feature presentations by researchers from France and Viet Nam on the bishop's life and contributions to the studies of Hue's history, culture, art, and philosophy.

He was especially interested in the local and Vietnamese cultures and became an expert on Vietnamese studies in early 20th century.

He launched the magazine Bulletin des Amis du Vieux Hue (The Bulletin of Friends of Old Hue) in 1914 and ran it for 30 years.

Vietnamese American to do PhD at Harvard

CALIFORNIA — Alexandria Huynh, a 17-year-old Vietnamese-American, has got a full scholarship to study for a PhD in immunology at the world-famous Harvard University in the US.

She was also accepted to doctoral programmes at Yale University and University of Pennsylvania, two other prestigious institutions.

Huynh was admitted to California State University in Los Angeles when she was just 13 and she recently got a bachelor degree in biology.

Fashion show presents The Little Mermaid

HCM CITY — More than 40 male and female professional models will present the latest collections by famous Hong Kong and Vietnamese designers at the Phong Cach (Style) Night 2010 yesterday at White Palace in Phu Nhuan District.

The event, themed Surreal Beauty Time, is based on the famous Broadway musical The Little Mermaid by Walt Disney.

The fashion collection Neptune's Daughters by Gosto (Viet Nam) has designs in blue, white, gold and silver that capture the colorful life found under the sea, while Black Witches by Mountain Yam (Hong Kong), uses mainly black, dark blue and, grey colours inspired by powerful witches that live in deep waters.

The Kisses by Kemi and Marilyn Lee (Hong Kong) stand out with nude, pastel colours and The Mermaid's Love Song by Ann' Gi (Viet Nam) accentuates luxury. — VNS
