SYDNEY — Two brothers, Luu Hong Quang, 20, and Luu Duc Anh, 17, took home six awards at the 76th Sydney Eisteddfod piano competition, which ended yesterday.

Luu Hong Quang was a student of Dr Tran Thu Ha, former director of the Viet Nam National Academy of Music.

From the age of five, Quang showed an extraordinary understanding of music and rhythm as well as excellent skills on the piano.

He has been awarded a full scholarship to study at the Australia International Music Conservatory (AIMC).

The Sydney Eisteddfod, a piano competition, has been discovering piano talent in Australia since 1934.

Participating for the third time, in five out of eight categories, Luu Hong Quang swept the board with two thirds, two firsts and one special prize.

Adjudicator Marilyn Meier said that his winning performance of Wiszt La Campanella was rhythmically elegant and played with a well projected yet delicate tone. "Technically excellent!" she added.

Quang won first prize for Chopin piano categories last year and a highly recommendation for the Recital Award in 2008.

Quang's younger brother, Luu Duc Anh, won the same award as his brother three years ago.

Dr. Luu Quang Minh, father of the awesome duo, shared his hope for his two sons: "Our family just hope our sons study well and see this competition as an opportunity to practise their skills. In the future, we hope they will be good musicians, serving the development of national music". —VNS
