HA NOI — Writer Bang Son died on Friday a few months after suffering from a stroke. He was 79 years old.

Son is best known for his works of prose about Ha Noi. Born Tran Quang Bon in the northern province of Ha Nam, he grew up in the nearby province of Hai Duong before working as a writer in Ha Noi.

He started writing at the age of 17 and his most famous pieces include Thu An Choi Nguoi Ha Noi (Food and Leisure of Hanoians), Duong Vao Ha Noi (Road to Ha Noi), Dong Song Ha Noi (Ha Noi's Rivers) and Ha Noi 36 Pho Phuong (36 Streets and Guilds of Ha Noi).

He wrote over 3,000 pieces on the capital as well as around 4,000 poems covering a variety of topics.

He received various prizes including one from the Viet Nam Writers' Association for children's fiction, a literary award from the Ha Noi Literature and Arts Association and a prize for a script from the Viet Nam Theatrical Artists' Association.— VNS
