HA NOI — The world premiere of new work composed by Tran Kim Ngoc will be performed in Ha Noi by the artist and the musikFabrik Cologne, a leading new German orchestra this Friday.

The show will include Ngoc's piece My Chau's World and a repertoire of exciting new music pieces by musikFabrik Cologne's composers.

Ngoc composed My Chau's World this year over the course of about three months especially for the Germany in Viet Nam 2010 event. She only finished the piece on Monday and is waiting for its debut performance.

My Chau was King An Duong Vuong's daughter. She married Zhong Shi, the ambitious Chinese warlord Zhao Tuo's son. Zhao Tuo attempted to invade Au Lac, but he never succeeded.

My Chau innocently betrayed her father when she promised her husband that she would drop goose feathers from her blanket along her track so her husband would be able to find her when conflict broke out between the two countries.

"I want to discover My Chau's inner world. What was she thinking? what were her desires and what was afraid of? How would she behave and act? Where were her limitations and boundaries," Ngoc said.

My Chau's World will be performed by nine musicians from the musikFabrik Cologne.

"It's a very special premier. I think I will adjust the piece after the rehearsal; and I have to wait until My Chau's World is played on stage to find out how it goes," Ngoc said.

Born in 1975, Ngoc is one of the most established musicians in Viet Nam. After completing her classical education at the Viet Nam National Academy of Music in Ha Noi, she studied contemporary music history and composition both in Ha Noi and at the Hochschule fur Musik in Cologne.

In her work she moves between performance, theatre and concert and as such is forging entirely new paths in Viet Nam. Her music theatre pieces have been well received internationally.

Ngoc used to be a guest at the Munich Biennial for Contemporary Music, and she regularly visits the US, France and Germany on working scholarships.

In 2004 she worked with Felix Ruckert on the production Venus in Ha Noi. Her piece What Makes The Spider Spin Her Web premiered in 2007.

The concert will feature three others by musikFabrik Cologne. They include Interference by Richard Barrett; Treatise by Cornelius Cardew and Glanz by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Ngoc knew about musikFabrik when she previously studied in Germany. "MusikFabrik are considered a leading orchestra for contemporary music, and a strong proponent of artistic innovation, of the unknown and the unusual."

Working closely together with composers, this ensemble of soloists from Cologne plays on hundreds of stages in Germany and internationally every year, Ngoc said.

Central to the work of musikFabrik is the confrontation of modern forms of communication and experimental means of expression in the fields of music and performance.

The concert is sponsored by the Prime Minister of North Rhine Westphalia.

It will begin at 8pm at Ha Noi Opera House on Friday. Free tickets are available at 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street. — VNS
