Film on poet's life wins award

HCM CITY — A feature film on Vietnamese poet Nguyen Du (1765-1820) on Sunday won the Golden Kite Award for celluloid film – among the highest awards bestowed by the Viet Nam Cinema Association at HCM City's Hoa Binh Theatre.

Titled Long Thanh Cam Gia Ca (The Song about a Musician in Thang Long Citadel) and directed by Dao Ba Son, the film tells the story of the hard lives of the Vietnamese people between 1783 and 1813 through the sorrowful love story of Nguyen Du and a young woman named Cam. This is the first time the great poet's life has been transferred onto the silver screen.

Three Silver Kite Awards were given to Canh Dong Bat Tan (Floating Lives), Khat Vong Thang Long (Thang Long Aspiration) and Vu Dieu Dam Me (Dance of Passion) by directors Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, Luu Trong Ninh and Nguyen Duc Viet, respectively.

The Best Actor Award went to Vu Dinh Toan for his role as King Le Long Dinh in Thang Long Aspiration while the Best Actress award was given to Lan Ngoc as Nuong in Floating Lives.

Director Luu Trong Ninh won the Best Director for Thang Long Aspiration. Best Playwright went to Van Le for the script The Song About a Musician in the Thang Long Citadel.

Bi Thu Tinh Uy (The Provincial Party Secretary) won the Golden Kite Award for video film.

In the short film category, awarded for the first time this year, there were no golden awards but two silver awards were given to Duong Kien (Trace of Ants) by Thieu Ha Quang Nghia and Me va Con (Mother and Child) by Phan Huyen My. — VNS
