Concert celebrates Music Day

HCM CITY — A free concert offering pop, rock, rap, jazz and hip-hop music will be held in HCM City at the Institute for Cultural Exchange with France (IDECAF) tomorrow.

The concert has been held annually for more than 10 years to celebrate World Music Day on June 21.

The World Music Day, which first took place in 1982, began as a proposal by French music and dance director Maurice Fleuret to the French Ministry of Culture.

Music Day festivals are held in more than 100 countries and territories in the world.

The concert from 6pm to 8pm is at IDECAF on 31 Thai Van Lung Street, District 1. It is free to the public.

Guangdong art troupe in town

HA NOI — A 43-member art troupe from China's Guangdong province started touring Ha Noi and HCM City yesterday.

The tour is part of wider celebrations of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Viet Nam and China.

Artists in the troupe were selected from the Fangnan song and dance troupe, the Guangzhou circus troupe and the folk music troupe of the Guangdong song and dance theatre.

The artists will deliver performances of works that have won national and international prizes and were performed during their tour of European, American and other Southeast Asian countries.

Performances will be held at the Hoa Binh Theatre in HCM City tonight and at the Au Co Art Centre in Ha Noi on Saturday.

Photos depict four seasons

QUANG NAM — Photographer Hoang The Nhiem is showcasing his best photos captured over the past 15 years in Hoi An city.

Themed Viet Nam – Four Seasons Beckon, the exhibition displays a book with four episodes entitled Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and 30 photos expressing culture, sights and customs of different regions in Viet Nam.

The exhibition will run until next Monday at the Lotus Gallery.

Ha Noi sets up festival board

HA NOI — Ha Noi's People's Committee has set up a board of directors to celebrate festival night to commemorate the city's 1,000th anniversary,

Excellent Artist Trong Dai, Thang Long Song, Music and Dance Theatre's director, will be the programme's general director. He will be assisted by vice directors Do Minh Tuan, Lai Van Sam and Ung Duy Thinh.

The event will take place on October 10 at My Dinh National Stadium, Ha Noi.

Teenage beauty pageant begins

HA NOI — A competition to find miss teen star of the year was launched on Tuesday.

The first round of the competition, open to 16- to 19-year-olds, will run from now until August 10, with the final taking place from September 26 to October 11.

Contestants for the title of Miss Teen Viet Nam will be judged on their educational achievements, beauty, friendliness, humanity and demeanour.

The winner will represent Viet Nam at international events such as Miss Teen Global and Miss Teen World.

Drums to beat for anniversary

HA NOI — Musician Nguyen Cuong has composed Lac Hong Drumbeats to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi.

The choral piece has been written for 100 bronze drums.

"While folk music is a symbol of our nation's loving and forgiving nature, our strength is projected through the bronze drum. I feel excited every time I hear it," Cuong said. — VNS
