VUNG TAU — More than 300 kites in a variety of shapes and colours are lighting up the skies in the coastal city of Vung Tau at the third International Kite Festival, which opened yesterday.
The four-day festival, with the theme Chung Mot Bau Troi (Sharing a Sky), features nearly 120 participants from 24 countries and territories, including Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and the host Viet Nam.
This year's attention is focused on the Japanese performances of the Rokkaku kite, a traditional six-sided Japanese fighting kite which is often hand painted with the face of a famous Samurai.
A night show of kite-flying art features modern and traditional kites of participants, with music and lights highlighting the festival today.
The event also features kite-flying performances and a kite exhibition at Paradise Beach.
The organiser, the Vung Tau City People's Committee, will select the most beautiful traditional Vietnamese kite, which will represent the country at the International Kite Festival in France in September.
High school students to compete in US international science contest
HCM CITY — Two research projects from Tran Dai Nghia High School have won tickets for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2011 in Los Angeles in May.
Nguyen Hai An, an 11th-grade student, was selected for his project that uses waste from shrimp breeding to make chitosan, which helps preserve vegetables and foodstuff.
Another project, Kinh thien van (the astronomical telescope), developed by a group of students in grade 11, helps observers of celestial phenomena and take photos of stars.
The fair in HCM City was organised by Intel Viet Nam in collaboration with the HCM City Department of Education and Training. — VNS
