HCM CITY — An exhibition of 100 paintings by disadvantaged children from special schools in HCM City has opened at the Equatorial Hotel.

The paintings show the children's happiness and joy in gathering together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival that is mainly for children.

This year, the festival falls on next Wednesday.

Through the paintings, the children also want to show their wishes and hopes to play and study well, their courage in overcoming fate and their aspirations to integrate into the society, said artist Nguyen Hoang Thinh Tri, who taught the children.

All the paintings will be auctioned off when the exhibition ends at the end of this month. Proceeds will benefit the schools that train the children: the HCM City Education and Vocational Training School for Street Children; the Anh Minh (Smart), Hy Vong (Hope) 1 schools for deaf children and the Gia Dinh School for the Disabled.

Some of the paintings were done by students of the Thai Binh Secondary School.

The Equatorial Hotel in HCM City has supported this event for 13 years. General manager James Montenegro said that this event, as well as gifts given to the children, was part of the hotel's support for the local community.

Next Monday, the hotel's staff will visit homeless old people and children at the Thanh Loc Centre in District 12 run by the city's Labour, Invalids&Social Affairs Department.

Established in 1966, the centre cares for 279 disabled senior citizens with several ailments including paralysis, as well as 63 disabled children between three and 18 years old. — VNS
