HCM CITY — More than 20 contemporary sculptures in different media are on exhibit at HCM City's Applied Gallery.

The show, Sai Gon Ha Noi 2010, features 15 veteran and emerging sculptors from Ha Noi and HCM City who hope the event will encourage young people to learn more about their art.

Most of the contemporary artworks symbolise love and life.

Among the highlights are Quy Luat (Rule) and Doi (bat) by Nguyen Xuan Tien and Tran Viet Hung in HCM City.

Tien's work uses stainless steel and ceramic, and portrays images of men, women and flowers.

Hung represents bats by using black paper placed over a mirror on the showroom's floor.

"I want my work to remind viewers about the senses of sight and hearing," said Hung, adding that his more modern style has attracted a young audience who often have a good laugh after viewing and discovering the work.

The Ha Noi-based Tran Trong Tri's Bay Len Tu Day (Flying) is a barbed-wire covered egg, while another work, Di San (Heritage), features a big, golden-yellow pebble placed on a glass box.

He says the piece means that "your dreams can help you escape from yourself."

Most of the artists spent at least a year working on their pieces.

Phan Cam Thuong, one of the city's leading fine art critics, said the works were "vibrant and talk to those who see them."

He said, however, that Vietnamese sculptors face difficulties in displaying their works because "art needs a big open space. Small spaces limit their ability to create".

The show runs until September 18 at Applied Arts Gallery at the HCM City Fine Arts University, 5 Phan Dang Luu Street, Binh Thanh District. — VNS
