Panamanian Week to be held in capital

HA NOI — The first ever Panamanian cultural week will be held in Ha Noi between November 1 and 6.

Various activities include photo exhibition, film screenings, and food festival at the Ha Noi National Library (31 Trang Thi Street) and Hanoi Cinematheque (22A Hai Ba Trung Street).

The photo exhibition entitled Discover Panama will be run until November 7, while two Panamanian films A Fist of a Nation and Blood Is Blood will be screened at 7.30 and 9pm on November 5-6.

‘Mekong Chronicle' wins ASEAN contest

HA NOI — The twelve-part Mekong Chronicle documentary series featuring the lives of people along the Mekong River by Vietnamese film-makers won first prize at the Photo, Documentary and Television Report Contest on ASEAN Community.

According to the judges, the highly artistic images and content expressed the creativity of the film-makers. The 20 minute documentary episodes were produced by the HCM City Television Film Company.

Twenty-two documentaries and TV reports and 14 photographic works received awards from the 670 entries from throughout ASEAN, received since the competition opened in May.

Gala to raise funds for flood victims

HCM CITY — More than 90 Miss Earth contestants from all over the world and 1,000 Vietnamese and foreign business people will gather at a charity gala dinner and cultural exchange to be held in HCM City next week to raise funds for central flood victims.

A 10-kilogramme ruby, a gemstone painting with the autographs of the contestants and a collection of wooden artworks will be auctioned among others. The artworks will have a minimum reserve price of US$2 million.

The event, scheduled to start at 5.30pm at the Queen Plaza in Tan Binh District, will be shown live on more than 10 television channels, including VTV, HTV, and VTC, according to organisers.

It is organised jointly by the Gia Gia Gemstones Corporation, the HCM City Red Cross Society, Lasta Joint-Stock Company, and Asean C&C Joint-Stock Company.

The month-long Miss Earth 2010 contest begins on Thursday.

Supermodel represents VN in China

HA NOI — Pham Ngoc Thach, 19, who won the Viet Nam Supermodel Contest earlier this year, is representing Viet Nam at the Miss Model of the World being held in Shenzen, China, from now until November 25.

Thach, who is 1.75m tall and measures 80-60-90, is sponsored by designer Hoang Hai and Ao Dai ABC at the contest.

Last year, Vietnamese model Nguyen Ngoc Lan Huong was among top four finalists at the event.

Cham tomb artifacts excavated

PHU YEN — Vestiges of ancient Cham crematoria artefacts were excavated in the central province of Phu Yen Province.

More than 70 crematoriums were discovered at an excavation site near the Cai River, said archaeologist Nguyen Tien Dong, who heads the excavation team.

Dong said that each crematorium were 1.5-2m in length and 0.8-1m in width.

The scientists have also discovered burnt charcoal and pieces of bone at the site. Archaeologist are continuing to work at the site. — VNS
