HA NOI — The newest production of Ha Noi based Youth Theatre will be presented tonight to raise funds for victims of the earthquake in Japan.
Entitled Scent of Soil, the play is a combination of different art forms, including performance, installation and puppetry.
Audiences will also learn about the daily life and culture of farmers in the north.
Farming tools will be used to create installations for the play.
Typical images of the northern rural regions with a haystack, a buffalo cart, a set of bamboo baskets and a wooden pole to carry various things will be seen in the play.
Play director Le Hung, who is also the theatre director, said he and his colleagues had spent more than two months searching in different corners of the north to find props for the play.
"Nowadays, it is not easy to find those once-familiar manual farming tools as the farmers have turned to motorised equipment," said People's Artist Hung.
The farming tools seem soulful in scenes depicting a rice plantation, making a conical hat or in the many other daily activities, Hung said.
Music of the play was in the style of traditional opera and contemporary music, he said.
Hung said the play was part of a project to promote images of Viet Nam's people and country. The theatre was negotiating with tourist agents to present the play to foreign audiences.
The show will start at 8pm at the Youth Theatre, 11 Ngo Thi Nham Street. The money from the tickets will be given to the Japanese Embassy in Ha Noi. — VNS
