HA NOI — A work of art depicting highlights of the northern province of Quang Ninh, such as Yen Tu, Ha Long Bay and Mong Cai Border Gate, beat more than 500 entries to win the top prize in design contest Viet Nam – Where I Live.

The graphic design, entitled Check-in Quang Ninh, created by 18-year-old Tran Quynh Nhi, was announced as the winner at the awards ceremony held yesterday in Ha Noi.

"I try to introduce the significant landscapes of Quang Ninh in my artwork," Nhi said. "It’s like an invitation to lure all people to visit my hometown, especially foreigners. If you don’t come to see Ha Long Bay, it’s like you know nothing about Viet Nam."

The design contest Viet Nam – Where I Live is organised by Vietnamese Student Magazine in collaboration with the London College for Design and Fashion (LCDF). It is open to Vietnamese and international candidates aged 15-28 who live in Viet Nam.

The competition was founded to discover and foster young talents who are passionate about creative design and want to develop their careers in this field.

Candidates will research the most unique and interesting aspects of their hometowns. Then they design a work of visual art or logo to identify the hometown, aiming to convey all of the highlights of the city through only one symbol.

The contest was first launched in 2016 and has become a key annual event among art-loving young people.

“Through this contest, we want to change opinions about design in Viet Nam,” said Stephen Burdett, co-founder of the contest. “The core of design is not only skills at using design tools, but also the generation of ideas that is the most important factor”.

Together with workshops, the contest creates a play-ground for young people who are passionate about design and a chance to gain more knowledge and experiences. — VNS
