Restoring Phong Le temple to cost more than $66,000

DA NANG — Da Nang People's Committee has decided to spend over VND1.4 billion (US$66,650) on restoring the Phong Le temple archaeological site in Hoa Vang District.

Restoration work will begin by replacing the ramshackle wooden components and roofs as well as repainting the parallel sentences. The process will follow recognised restoration techniques.

Phong Le Temple is dedicated to Than Nong (the God of Rice). It was recognised as a provincial heritage for its historical and cultural values in 2007.

 

French philosopher to lecture on teaching children to think

HA NOI — French philosopher Oscar Brenifier will give a lecture on positive reasoning among children at a seminar titled Teaching Children How to Think with Dr Oscar Brenifier at the French Cultural Centre, L'Espace, tonight.

Brenifier is the author of a collection of books titled PhiloZenfants (Philosophy for Children). The collection was written to help parents answer questions that are frequently asked by children. He will also visit some schools and talk to children about practising their thinking skills from a young age.

Vietnamese movies to mark Cinema Day in HCM City

HCM CITY — Film lovers will have the opportunity to watch 15 Vietnamese films at the BHD Star Cinema to commemorate Viet Nam Cinema Day (March 15).

Well-known films such as Ao Lua Ha Dong (The White Silk Dress), Mua Len Trau (The Buffalo Boy), Chuyen Cua Pao (Pao's Story), Trai Tim Be Bong (The Little Heart) and Canh Dong Bat Tan (Floating Lives) will be screened from March 15-31. Tickets priced at VND40,000 (US$1.9) per film are available at BHD Star Cinema box offices.

Photographer opens gallery with black and white shots

HCM CITY — Photographer Le Hong Linh has opened a gallery at 149 Cong Quynh in District 1. On display are 21 of his best black-and-white photos that he has chosen from hundreds of award winning shots.

"I hope that it will become a popular venue for foreign tourists to enjoy works of art and buy Vietnamese photos. This is my way of spreading the beauty of our country and people," said Linh.

On the opening day, fellow photographers expressed their desire for the gallery to be the first step towards opening a national photography market.

Cyclo race raises $30,000 for disadvantaged children

HCM CITY — This year's Cyclo Challenge raised more than US$30,000 that will be used to help educate disadvantaged children in HCM City and neighbouring provinces by building schools, providing scholarships and vocational training.

Officials with the Sai Gon Children Charity, which organises the annual contest that took place last weekend, said HSBC won the team event with VNG Zing and Megastar coming in second and third respectively.

The event attracted nine teams which were made up of representatives from the event's exclusive platinum sponsor and event partner VNG, as well as eight golden sponsors, including HSBC, Megastar, Adidas, and VinaLiving (VinaCapital Group). — VNS
