HA NOI — The winners of a national poster competition held to celebrate 65 years of Viet Nam's August 1945 Revolution and National Day (September 2) were announced yesterday.

Both professional and amateur artists were asked to submit their entries between March and May of this year, and the organising board received a total of 810 entries by 593 painters from 49 cities and provinces across the country.

In the category for posters celebrating the two anniversaries, Bui Dai Hao from Ha Noi took first prize, while Nguyen Anh Minh from the northern province of Vinh Phuc won the category for promoting culturally responsible living.

Young entrants

In total, 32 painters were honoured across both categ-ories.This year's competition also attracted many young candidates and Nguyen Thi Huong, 21, from Ha Noi Open University was the youngest entrant to win a prize.

Being a graphic design student, she was more than happy to take part in the competitions and previously, she won a consolation prize for a poster she designed celebrating southern Viet Nam's liberation.

"I'm inspired by my country's anniversaries. This time my poster was awarded third prize, I hope to be more successful in future competitions," she said.

On behalf of the organising board, Ninh Thi Thu Huong from the Basic Culture Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that this year, the entries had clearly expressed the topics and reflected the creative talents and hard work of the artists.

The painters also used a variety of styles and materials in their posters, Huong said.

"However several entrants used photos in their posters or processed them with digital techniques. This can limit the creativity of the posters and may also violate copyright law," she added.

The organiser produced replicas of the winning posters which were then exhibited in the northern provinces of Thai Nguyen and Tuyen Quang to celebrate the August Revolution on August 19 and National Day on September 2. — VNS
