HCM CITY — The first scene of Ve Dat Thang Long (Arrival in Thang Long), another TV series that celebrates the 1,000th anniversary of Ha Noi, was shot outdoors last weekend at Dong Nai Province's Long Thanh District.

The project was shot by M&T Pictures at the commission of HCM City Television (HTV) as a tribute to the capital from the country' largest city, HCM City.

The story is based on a few lines about King Ly Thai To in the famous Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu (The Complete History of Dai Viet), compiled by historian Ngo Sy Lien under the Tran dynasty around 700 years ago.

Scriptwriter Pham Thuy Nhan has developed an action-packed 40-episode plot.

It chronicles the historical period from the first years of the 11th century under the reign of King Le Long Dinh, described by historians as one of the country's most atrocious rulers, to 1010 when King Ly Thai To decided to move the capital to Thang Long, now Ha Noi.

That move marked the beginning of the country's glorious development in political, social, economic, cultural and military terms.

Brief as it was, it was an eventful period which witnessed the fall and rise of different dynasties and a breakthrough in the country's history.

The storyline of the TV series revolves around the complex and thrilling struggle between Le Long Dinh and Ly Thai To, who was then Dinh's leading general, with dramatic development both inside and outside the forbidden citadel.

The cast, including Diem My, Nhat Kim Anh and Minh Anh among others, is led by actors Ly Hung and Le Minh Thang as Ly Thai To and Le Long Dinh, respectively.

Citadel scenes are shot at Giai Phong studio in HCM City, while outdoor scenes were filmed in the southern province of Dong Nai and the northern province of Ninh Binh.

The series cost twice as much as those with modern settings because of the added expense of historic costumes and settings, according to M&T Pictures.

The series is one of several TV projects that also celebrate King Ly Thai To and the founding of Ha Noi, marking the renaissance of the country's costume films, which have long been dormant.

Co-directed by Tran Ngoc Phong and Ho Ngoc Xum, the series will be broadcast on HTV in early December. — VNS
